29 years young

So I am now 29 years old. And its turning out so far to be a really great year.

I did dinner and drinks with some friends on Monday evening, which was my actual birthday. I had a great time and it was just nice to be around people that I cared about. Friday was the official party. A friend of mine decided to throw me an early "surprise" party. He seemed to forget that I'm the only gay in town that is on time. I even showed up like 3 or 4 minutes early. I knocked on his window so he would come and get me then noticed a sign on his door (there is a glass door in between his door and the outside so I couldn't knock on his door). The sign said "Scott's Suaree" Then I saw the main door was propped open, so I walked in and knocked on the main door and walked in and they were all surprised that I had walked in when I did. But we had a great time. We went to Nellie's ( a gay sports bar) and I ended up closing the place down. Needless to say I slept pretty much the entire next day.

The following day, Saturday, I went to Jewish Speed Dating. I did enjoy myself, but the experience was an interesting reflection on our experience being influenced by how an event ends rather than the entirety of the event. Most of the guys I had a "speed date" with were quite bad at conversation. Whether they were disinterested in the whole experience, or me in particular I don't know. But the conversations should go like this. I ask a question. You answer it and follow it with a question of your own. I then do the same. The amount of awkward silence shouldn't have happened. It wasn't that serious of an event. But the last guy I had a date with I found to be very enjoyable. Instead of discussing the traditional topics (career, length of time in DC, etc) we talked about reality tv programming and the muppets. He was funny and I appreciated his ease of conversation. I told him that he was a great way to end the evening. For those of you who don't know how it works, at the end of the night you circle which of your dates you were interested in seeing again and if they do the same then your contact info is sent to the other person. If only one of you puts something neither of you are notified. So it seems as if he put me down as I got an email yesterday when I woke up giving me his contact info. I emailed him last night at midnight (when I had a second to do so). Now I'm waiting for a response ;)

Also (to continue to show my good fortune so far) I won passes to go see an early show of He's Just Not That Into You. Can't wait!!!!

In other news. School is going well. I finally have commitments from a methodologist and after much harassment, got feedback. I'm moving forward on setting a date for my proposal defense (the week of March 15th).

The gym is also going well. Despite my birthday binging, I feel some changes in myself through the gym. I've picked up a boxing class and yoga as well as increasing my cardio by 200 calories a day. I will be buff by the end of the year.

I guess that's all that's going on with me.

birthday celebration

My birthday was this past weekend. I had a great time celebrating. I changed it up this year instead of the normal Halo til you drop evening, I chose a different bar. So we descended on Nellie's, a gay sports bar. I know I know.. A gay sports bar you say, isn't that an oxymoron? Well, yes it kind of is. They had four televisions upstairs. One had the election results from South Carolina. One had figure skating (a truly gay sport). One had a Georgetown basketball game, so I assume the people watching it were alums supporting their alma mater. And the other had some other sport where people touch a ball and run somewhere. (My knowledge of sports is astounding isn't it?).

Following that, we went to Town, the relatively new dance bar that opened up. Danced the night away, met a couple guys, you know the usual routine. Left there at about 3 am and proceeded to Annie's Steakhouse for breakfast. Yummy.

The next morning I slept til 2pm so I could sleep through my hangover. I woke up at 11 with a horrible headache and decided i didn't need to move until I was done with that pain.

A great birthday. Thanks to all those that called/ came/ or emailed.

birthday continued...

Well things were good for the rest of my birthday. A lot of people showed up. It was a welcome feeling, right after not taking a new job, that so many people cared to show up and wish me well. It was definately welcome and I appreciate the number of people who came to show me their love. So for all of them, thank you so much.

And the good news, I was able to put off my bad mood for the entirety of my party. I've been so moody over the past two weeks. I have no real idea and its much longer than my time of the month usually lasts, so this seems to be more long term. I guess I need some sort of a shake up. TO some extent, I just want to shut myself off from everyone for a couple of weeks until I get this out of my system. I dont like being around people at all.

Part of it is that I'm tried of trying to do the gay thing. It seems that being gay is the most competitive thing humanly possible and I'm tired of trying to be that competitive. Here are two examples: One guy that I met relatively recently. Cute enough guy, but within one two hour conversation I knew we'd be a horrible match. I am outgoing and more extroverted, he's incredibly introverted. I talk all the time about myself. He never does unless you ask specific questions. I like going out. But in the course of conversation, I got the serious impression that he didn't have many friends in the DC metropolitan area. So I invited him out twice with me AND A GROUP OF PEOPLE. Never ever was it solo nor was it intended to actually be dates. So how come he mentioned to someone that he just doesn't want to date right now (meaning about me). Now other than the whole "He's just not that into you" philosophy that says that what he means is he's not wanting to date me right now, not just date... but why is it that men feel the need to reject me in advance from actually pursuing or asking out? Am I doing something horribly wrong? Are gay guys just never nice without sex being involved? But enough about that fucker.

The next story shows how I just can't compete with them at all. At some point towards the end of my party on Friday... a guy started talking to my group that I didn't know so we started talking to him and he explained to us his connection to our group as one of the members of the group "gave him his first road head." Excellent.... but (and this happens with the boy sitting on my lap--- and without me having even 5 minutes to try and flirt) another unmentioned friend has his hand on the guy's crotch. Jesus, I didn't even have a moment to process the situation, much less attempt to pursue before I was blocked on the front. I just can't compete that seriously in the gay dating/ pickup pool. So maybe I should start dating women. It seems like it would be a lot easier.

In a boy non-related movement, it took my father three days after my birthday to call and wish me a happy birthday (which means that my grandmother didn't remind him until that point) but then tells me I need to stop by next time i'm in town even if its for a conference. Ummm I don't think you can give me those ultimatums when you forgot my birthday.
