Presidential Debate 2- notes and errata

Random thoughts:

Who McCain should choose for treasury secretary? I vote for the teller at my bank. She knows how to count and always makes exact change. And she has as much experience, if not more, than Palin.

Meg Whitman? Didn't she lay people off today?

McCain is so stiff. He's doing his best to be engaging, but so stiff. I guess that means he'll get the ent vote from this debate. (for those who don't know, look for ents in Lord of the Rings).

Under McCain's plan for buying mortgages, can he get 7-10?

McCain looks like a serious d-bag when he's listening to Obama's answer.

Working with Joe Lieberman does not constitute bi-partisanship.

The Republican response to everything is to just say what they want if they do not want to answer the question or listen to the truth.

I'm not friends with John.

Is Obama telling me to turn off some lights in my apartment?

The average american is thinking: What does the inventor of the vacuum have to do with taxes?

RIP: Debbie Does DC

The DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey was found dead by suicide today. While I doubt that she actually killed herself (ahem republican senator was her client). She was an alum of Rollins College, like yours truly. But I enjoyed how she, like Larry Flynt showed America the hypocrisy of family values.

political observations

Its been an exciting few days in the world of politics, and most of you know how excited I am by elections. Who knew Hillary would be able to come back that way in Iowa, or Edwards wouldn't make a real dent in Iowa. But I have some thoughts so far.

I'm glad Hillary won in NH. I will gladly support either candidate come November, but Obama needs to hone his campaigning. If he is to become the nominee (not saying he is not saying he isnt), he doesn't really have any campaign skills. He won the senate nomination after one of his opponents had to bow out after a sex scandal. His main opponent then became a guy who bowed out after a sex scandal leaving him to run against of all people Allan Keyes (who once had a great show called Allan Keyes is Making Sense... and the inside joke was he was the only one on the show who didn't make sense). So with that behind him if he had an easy coronation, he'd lose to a more skilled campaigner in the GOP side. So he needs to lose a few of these things. On the other hand Hillary needed this to get more in touch with her emotions.

Some other winners and losers:

Loser: Edwards- After campaigning for four years in Iowa, even though everyone thinks he's very nice, came in barely second place.

Loser: Romney- It sucks to be the victim of religious discrimination, but you are.... Remember that next time you oppress gay people.

Winner:Super Tuesday- Finally a chance for more than two states to select the president.

Loser- polls: they still can't get it right.

Winner: John McCain- while this may be a re-match of 2000 for him, he shows that he can still be an elder statesman

Loser- Rudy Giuliani- Technically he's not campaigned rigorously in these places, but his showings are abysmal. If Ron Paul does equally good, that doesn't say much for you chances.

Another one bites the dust

AS I am sure you are already aware, Jerry Falwell has passed away. Or to put it in his terms, Lucifer has called him back to hell. Good riddance Jerry! You really became a buffoon in your later years, blaming the pagans, abortionists, and gays for 9-11. And then taking your crusade against television characters such as Tinky Winky was rididuclously funny. In truth, there is only one way to celebrate your life this week.... lots and lots of gay sex. So I will do my part, I hope my readers will do theirs as well.

On a side note: there is something truly interesting that occurs when a hated individual dies. WHen a famous person passes, there is usually an air of sadness, or at least respect of silence about the matter. But, last night, everyone I knew celebrated and toasted Falwell's passing. I don't blame these people and I participated in these toasts. Its just weird how people react when someone they loathe dies.

Yesterday...

So much to write about from yesterday.

First: Art Buchwald passed away. I actually met him once. He came in to Barnes and Noble in Georgetown when I worked there and he wanted to sign his books. I thought he was just a crazy man who thought he wrote a book, so I called the manager to deal with it (which we really did with all authors- not just the ones I didn't beleive). So Tibbett got the books for him to sign and afterwards she asked if I knew who he was and I didnt. The day before he published an article about how sucky it was to be an author because booksellers had no idea who you are when you went to sign books... I felt bad... as I was that bookseller.

Second: Crazy Guy on the Train. After work, I went to Capitol Hill for a fancy shindig with Americans for Democratic Action. On the way there, I rode the train with Molly and this crazy guy sat next to us and started chatting away. He was very fidgety like he was on crack withdrawal, but he started talking to us. We were nice and friendly as he started to tell us things like his gay trips to Florida where he was almost bitten by an alligator and asking us if we liked the city and such. Then Molly gets off the train and he's like "what's your name?" "Are you gay?" "How old are you?" "OMG, I'm like twice your age" and me thinking "ummm you are acting like you are on crack, I don't plan to go out on a date with you anyways." But luckily my stop was next Woo Hoo.

Third: Meeting the powerful: So i got to stop and chat with some pretty exciting people. Representative Conyers, Altmire,Hodes, McDermott, Waters, Tiahrt, and Senator Akaka.

I also met a cute boy there, that I was able to hunt down online later. I might email him and ask him out... we'll see... we all know my luck on that as well, so don't expect a followup here :)

What will become of Kitty?

As the election excitement has died down a little, two things come to mind. One: Welcome back Trent Lott. I love when Republicans elect old white Southern racists to leadership positions. He's so much easier to hate than Frist was, who on his first weekend as leader saved someone's life on the Florida Turnpike.

But the important question that is on my mind is what will become of Kitty (Katherine) Harris? Every so often a candidate of such craziness comes along that you just don't want to lose their public spotlight. The last time this happened was ALan Keyes during his presidential run. He was rewarded with a show on MSNBC called "Alan Keyes is Making Sense," which was hilarious. The inside joke was everyone on the show made sense EXCEPT Alan Keyes. So I want Kitty to get her own show. Maybe she could be the antithesis to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and force make overs on attractive women to make them hideously ugly, like she was during the 2000 recount.

Oh Kitty, do stay in touch with society, we will miss you.

Two conferences and an election

So I have been quite a busy boy lately. Last week I went to Anaheim for the ASHE Conference. All in all it was... though I think the one in Philly was better. Cities where you can walk to everything make better conference locations than cities that you can only drive. It creates a better sense of camaraderie. The sessions were ok, but last years appealed to me much much more than the ones this year. But I got to hang out with some good friends. We hit up three gay bars: Mick and Macks (an mix between JR's and Halo). We mainly played pool there while listening to music on a digital jukebox. Then all of a sudden a bunch of Asian guys showed up like out of nowhere and immediately. We were like WTF?!??!?!?!?!?!?! Where'd all the ASians come from? Granted on the East Coast they are not as prevalent. But then we saw them put up signs for Club Asia. There were some attractive Asian guys there too.. something I don't see much, or any of in DC (i'm sure they are there, I just haven't seen them). Then we went to the Brit Bar, which was a mix between JR's and Green Lantern. We walk in and immediately some guy (Salvador) is trying to give M&M and Navy Rich a backrub. It was hilarious, especially when M&M was like "I love when my straight friends come to bars with me" as he puts his hand around NavyRich. Then Sal went into deeply apologetic mode and kept trying to make friendly conversation with us. Eventually we asked him what the bar down the street was like. He said "that's where f*ggots suck c*ck." So I responded with "well lets go boys" and so we did. Last bar of the night was The Mine Shaft... any bar with the word shaft in it is not going to be pretty. It was ok, not as scary as I thought it would be. And no f*ggots sucking c*ck either... false advertising.

The only other story of note from the conference was that I was supposed to meet with a friend of my professors to go over research stuff and get some "mentoring" BUt I also get the impression the guy is interested in me (as all professors seem to be). So we decide we'll meet Friday at 10am and i wait and wait and wait. An hour later the c-blocker walks by (he'll appreciate that's what his name is now) and I call him to come have coffee with me while I wait. No show at all. This professor I see everywhere having coffee, tea, or a meal with every single person there except me. So I don't see him til our last full day there. And we're crossing a main intersection and I say hi but don't mention being stood up and he's like how are you? i'm like ummm other than waiting two hours for you great. So I get back to DC after the conference and he emails me with: "I'm sorry we weren't able to meet to discuss your topic." ummm... by weren't able to meet do you mean "i forgot all about you, but am still not apologizing?" He wants to talk by phone, but right now I don't want to... maybe after the semester.

For the last two days, I've been volunteering and doing stuff for registration at a conference right near my hotel. Its a quick hundred dollars so I am not complaining. But, all these professors were checking me out... I swear to god if I didn't hate faculty right now, I'd be so able to get tons of academic booty.

And most important, what a glorious night Tuesday was. The democrats pick up the house and 6 Senate seats. Thank you God. You have finally smiled on the forces of good. I'd also like to note however, that every candidate I sent money to lost still. 6 years of political involvement and not one winning candidate yet. Hmmmm.. That's it no more donating money. I can't wait til 2008 with Kaplain.... we're gonna rock all night long until every election result is in. :) Whooo...

Other than that some minor stuff: I find out an old crush has a new boyfriend. Some guy I actually know... and ummmm how to say this with some modesty... I'm sooo much more attractive... Oh well, he has no idea what he lost. I realized today that I only have about 4 real weeks left to succeed at my New Years resolution: to go on three dates with the same guy. The most I've had so far is 1 date with talk about a second. (which happened once or twice). But I think I'm about to lose my New Years Resolution. But if you happen to know a guy who would like to go out with me at least three times by Jan 1, please forward my contact information onto them. There does not have to be 4 dates, just 3.
